This is what's left of my rosemary santolina.:(
You can see it on the rock wall behind Mary's statue in my recent banner photo. It was big and brown there. In the first photo, there is a golden oregano in the middle that has been struggling to survive. The santolina has long appendages with green on the tips, but I'm not so sure that it is going to make it. The Herbal Husband was like a mother hen. Putting new soil around and giving it extra water. Can't stop it once it starts! We will see at the end of the season, but let me know what you think. Hope you had a great day. Talk to you later. More adventures from Europe or Vancouver coming.
It's always hard for me to give up on a plant..I would probably wait for spring and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI agree - what if there is just one tiny spark left that is stubborn - you might be rewarded next Spring. If not then the decision will be out of your hands (& the Herbal Husband's)
ReplyDeleteAlways sad to see this happen - I tried everything possible to save my Rex Rosemary. Nothing worked:o(
Gardeners are eternal optimists!
My experiance with santolina's and similar plants is you have to keep pruning or harvesting a little many time a season to keep it small or shaped. If left to grow it will get to the end of its life cycle.... some of these herbs are 3-5 years and then are so woody..... they are meant to be replaced.... no doubt with babies from the same plant but in reality new small pots from who ever. I have come to accept that my time is better spent getting the replacements ready than coddeling a plant that is old... too, there is much more satisfaction in getting the new ones started than being frustrated by a plant that is ready to end.
ReplyDeleteThanks ladies for your advice! I think we will wait to see what happens.
