The Spearmint Lives On!

A Tiny Bit of Green in A Lot of Brown!
Wow!  Where has November gone?  I certainly didn't have a lot to say, did I?  And now The Herbal Husband has gone to visit family and friends in Peru!  I guess that is the good news and bad news.  I know I take for granted what he does for me around here each and every day!  I am exhausted chasing those darn squirrels away from the peanut caddy!!

I was out on the street brooming the leaves from our neighbor's giant oak tree into the front beds.  It is a wild and crazy thing.  The spearmint is surviving in a sea of brown!  I did get some lemon verbena and Texas tarragon cut and hanging in the basement to dry.   So I will be down in the workroom some day next week.  I really need to work on some herbal tea blends.  I have been drinking too much black tea!  Never!  But this is an herbal blog and I need to start using what I dried!

We are having spring type weather here.  It was 65° yesterday!   Supposedly the bottom will drop out next week.  I really do enjoy sweater weather.  Now on to the important stuff.  I didn't get to do a blogiversary giveaway in August.  I will however be doing a monster Herbal Christmas giveaway soon.  Please stay tuned!  Hope you are having a great day wherever you may be.  Looks like turkey leftovers are tonight's dinner.  Talk to you soon.

In My Haste, Herbally Speaking!

A Beautiful Rose Thorns and All!

Really beautiful bee balm Pressed!
A Lovely Rose Bud and Other Roses in Bloom!
Sometimes my haste makes for beautiful items, florally speaking!  As I was undoing my paper towel tower the other day, I came across the beautiful red rose with thorns, a couple of very complete bee balms pressed nicely and various roses, especially the blush colored one and I don't think I grew it!  Oops, senior moment!  The Herbal Husband may be able to remind me where it came from.  It is really senior times here!  He doesn't remember either! Oh, boy, we in big trouble! Hee! Hee!  But we're having fun!  Reviewing photos from earlier this year for my annual calendar and the blush rose was from my talk on Shakespeare's herbs and flowers!  Whew!

So I thought shadow box, but then I would have to spray them and they probably won't last too long even sprayed.  Then I thought about making an old-fashioned scrapbook as they did in Victorian times.  I just had a light bulb moment down in my work space.  I have a bunch of lavender leaves that have dried.  I am going to put those in a glass apothecary jar and place the pressed flowers along the edges of the jar and the lavender leaves will hold the pressed flowers in suspension.

Will Probably Move This Out of Direct Light!
A View From the Top!
Actually like it a lot!  Lost a few petals and leaves when arranging, but I really like the look.  I had it in a smaller container, but it was too jammed in.  Sort of looks like a dried terrarium from Victorian times!  Never know what I am going to discover in my haste!

Going to be in the deep freeze by the end of the week.  We have lost our snow already.  Only one more day to enter my herbal mystery giveaway.  I am thinking we are going to leave it a mystery except to say there is jam and jelly coming to the lucky winner!  So if you want to leave a comment, click here or go to the upper right hand column of my home page to enter.  Remember 5:00 PM, EST, Tuesday, December 13, 2016 is the deadline.

Just Enjoying Blue Sky and the Herb Garden!

Just Bask in That Blue Sky!
The Herb Garden is Really Beautiful with Sun!
It must be the holiday season, the kitchen faucet has a drip of epic proportions and The Herbal Husband is determined to fix it!  A man on a mission.  It has always been an adventure with him!  I will do my best to blog every day, but if I miss one, don't worry, I will try to make it up later on in the month.  As I sit here writing, it has already started to cloud up!

So enjoy the one day in Pittsburgh that has a blue sky!  Maybe we will have one more, but not many more until we get into early next year.  We are slowly creeping towards winter.  It will be cold and snow showers the next few days.  Nothing like the upper Midwest, but still a jolt to the senses!

The herbal elves have been busy getting your box ready.  I will be posting a photo of all the parts before it is sent next week.  I think if you are the winner, you will be pleased with the choices.  You must only comment on the giveaway post to be entered.  I will put a link at the top of my homepage on the right hand side for your convenience.  Remember only one entry will be counted to give everyone a fair chance.  Hope you are having a sunny day wherever you may be!  Will talk to you tomorrow!

Lots Going On, Herbally Speaking and Happy Thanksgiving!

Had a Fun Afternoon Learning About Pittsburgh Area Tea Businesses!
Finished The Gardener by Blackbird Designs for Me!
Took a Tea Blending Class at Rosemary House!
Fresh from the Oven Scones at Sweet Remembrances!

A Beautiful Piece of Embroidery by Bertha Reppert!

Hot Pepper Jelly with Cream Cheese on Whole Wheat with a Parsley Garnish!
Bonnie's Beautiful Table Decoration for the Western PA Unit's Meeting!
One of My Favorites, Alfajores--A Cookie from Peru and Argentina and Other South American Countries!
The time keeps flying by.  So here are some of the highlights since we last spoke.  Our growing season has definitely ended.  We did have a bit of snow on the ground.  Forgot to get a photo!  Bonnie and I have been to the first Pittsburgh Tea Festival.  I think we would say it was a big hit especially discovering all of the tea businesses in the 'Burgh!  I stocked up on a few different chai blends for the winter to come.  Just click on the link above and you will have most if not all of the links for the vendors that were present.  I hopefully will be talking about my favorites as last minute Christmas gifts in the coming days.

I have been already doing my counted cross stitch that I love so much and I have finished The Gardener by Blackbird Designs for me.  I started The Fairy Garden by the same designer, Blackbird Designs.  They also do quilting and rug hooking patterns!  Next Bonnie and I took a short road trip down to The Rosemary House and Sweet Remembrances in Mechanicsburg.  We took a tea blending class with Susanna on Tuesday night and then had our second afternoon tea of the year with Nancy at Sweet Remembrances Tea Room and I made it a surprise birthday party for Bonnie.  She was definitely surprised!  Please if you are in the Mechanicsburg, PA area, remember to check out the wonderful herbal items that Susanna and The Rosemary House have to offer and have afternoon tea with Nancy every Wednesday and the first Saturday of the month!  Now that she is decorated for Christmas, you must go and have tea if you can and then you can check out Rosemary House right next door!

My final activity of the month was attending the local Western PA unit of the Herb Society of America's monthly meeting about South American cooking with an emphasis on Argentina.  Of course, they talked briefly about my favorite, lemon verbena.  Hope to get to discuss the Genus Aloysia in the coming months.  Larger than I thought!  Bonnie was in charge of food and boy, these ladies and gentlemen enjoy good food!  So hope November has been good for you getting plants situated in their new homes for the winter if you live in the northern half of the U.S. and drying others to use for potpourris and teas.

Can't believe tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the United States!  A time to be with family and friends!  The Herbal Husband and I met on Thanksgiving 33 years ago!  Seems like yesterday!  We enjoy having our feet up between basting the turkey and watching football.  We are spending the day on our own which is how we like it these days.  Going to have rain for turkey day.  Hope you stay safe and reach your travel destination if family is far away.  Hoping to do 31 days of blogging in December!  Going to be doing a surprise herbal giveaway in the early part of December so you will have it for the holidays!  Will talk to you sooner than later.  Happy Thanksgiving from The Herbal Husband and I!

If The Garlic Chives Are Blooming, It Must Be August and Other Herbal Thoughts!

Fall Is Approaching!
August means a couple of things for me in the herb garden!  Garlic chives will bloom and you must keep the flower heads clipped to keep them from spreading far and wide.  Also you need to be thinking about what you will be bringing inside in containers, harvesting plants for drying and/or freezing (which really you should have been doing all along) and for me I need to take stock of what herbs I will make into jelly.  Most of you don't have to worry about that.

Garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) do have a place in the herb garden.  The leaves give that garlic flavor that may be more palatable for some including me.  The white flowers add a pop of brightness to all of the other flowers in the herb garden and they keep attracting those wonderful pollinators that we need.  I just try to keep my garlic chives in a clump and dig out the extras.  They are a beautiful perennial addition to the herb garden.

It has been like a sauna and monsoon season at the same time here in the 'Burgh!  The herb garden is definitely lush.  The weeds are rampant as well!  Hopefully you have had a great day wherever you may be.  Don't forget my giveaway.  You can click on this link to leave a comment and hopefully win.  An All Homemade Herbal Giveaway!  The giveaway ends on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Noon!  One entry per person please!

Staying Alive in the Herb Garden!

Salad Burnet with Frost!
Can't Believe I Still Have Fresh Tarragon!
Horehound Straggly But Still Alive!
This Calendula Still Has Buds to Bloom!
Pineapple Mint Still Going Strong and Now in My Lawn!
Will the Birds Eat My Beautyberries This Year?
Was walking around the herb garden and back garden yesterday.  It was cold enough to have frost, but here in the herb garden there are still definite signs of life in the herbs.  Some lose their flavor like the salad burnet.  It becomes herbal eye candy.  Others like chives hold their flavor for a long while.  Always surprised to see what has made it so far although we have not had winter yet in the 'Burgh!  We haven't even had measurable snow yet!  So it isn't surprising that these herbs have clung to life in the garden.  I am going to track if the birds and specifically the cardinals (I have heard) love the beautyberries.  Hopefully they will enjoy them over the winter season.  The purple berries make such a beautiful statement to the brown of the garden.

I hope you are having a wonderful day getting ready for the holiday season with your friends and family.  Let me know what's still around in your herb gardens.  A foggy and frosty day again here.  Going into the 50's.  Not very Christmas like around here.  Getting closer to the drawing for my jam and herbal jelly giveaway.  There is still time to enter at the link on my home page or click the link to the left.  Winners will be drawn from my blog and Facebook.  One entry per person please.  I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Celebrating Seven Years of Blogging!

An Herbal Bouquet for You!
This year of blogging has flown by without not too much writing from me!  My blogging experiment started because of the Reppert sisters blog, Rosemary's Sampler.  They are still going strong and always an inspiration!  Hopefully in year eight I will be a bit more verbose!  Blogging from different devices from my laptop has proved a challenge.  So I will limp along into the next year and hopefully be able to improve those skills.  Thought I should do a giveaway of some kind to celebrate.  What do you think?

The weather is getting hotter again.  The plants are in need of water after the first half of the year was too wet.  It has been a challenge.  Will think of something good to giveaway and I will be back next week with the details.  Enjoy your weekend.  Talk to you later.

More Christmas Book Suggestions for the Beginning Herbalists!

A Beginning Guide from Rosemary Gladstar
Two Volumes from Henriette Kress for the Practical Herbalist!
Well, never in a million years would I think that I would be posting about medicinal herbal books, but here I am.  As I am getting older, I am turning to more herbal remedies.  I will not be prescribing for you, but will talk about my experiences and what successes I have had.  So we are less than two weeks away from Christmas and if you are still trying to find that perfect gift herbally speaking, I think I have some help.

Natural Health Magazine calls "Rosemary Gladstar one of the most influential herbalists."  I have always heard her name and when I had the chance to buy one of her latest books, Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs, A Beginner's Guide, I did so.  The book is divided into four chapters, Chapter 1 Welcome to the Wonderful World of Medicinal Herbs, which talks about what a medicinal herb is, how it is used, the benefits of medicinal herbs and starting a medicinal herb garden.  Chapter 2 How to Make Your Own Herbal Remedies talks about making tea, syrups, oils, salves, etc. and dosages and duration.  Chapter 3 9 Familiar Herbs & Spices to Grow and Use talks about very common herbs and spices like cinnamon and rosemary and that's why I thought this is something I could do myself.  Chapter 4 24 Safe & Effective Herbs to Know, Grow and Use.  Again,  I don't think there were any on this list that I hadn't heard of, such as chickweed and burdock, but I really don't know the medicinal value and I think I will enjoy learning about them.  Well, now I have a little more time to read and learn for next year's season!

The second books I would recommend come from an herbalist in Finland named Henriette Kress called Practical Herbs and Practical Herbs 2.  I have always said as always as long as you know the botanical name of the plant you are learning about, you will be able to read anyone's book from anywhere in the world.  These books were recommended by my herbal sister, Debs Cook in England.  She has never steered me wrong at least herbally speaking!  Henriette has basics for making various basic preparations in her first book and then a description of various herbs and some pages called quick helps.  Her second book has more recipes, a chapter on energetics whether an herb is hot or cold, dry or moist, a chapter on problems and the last chapter with a different description list of herbs than in the first book.  Again, I liked the information I found about heartburn.  As I read both of these books in more detail I will comment further.  Both of these women grew up with strong herbal backgrounds with family members.  I trust their opinions.  I was just given the name of a fourth book for you to consider.  Just ordered it on BookFinder.com.  It is called Herbal Home Remedy Book by Joyce Wardwell.  It was recommended by one of our members of Herbaholic's Herbs on Facebook.  Always learning something interesting about herbs from them.  Ms. Wardwell is an American and Sarah who recommended it to me says she recommends it as a beginning book in all of her workshops.  Thanks Sarah!  I'll put a photo up on this post when I get my copy!

My Joyce Wardwell Book Arrived!
All three books are very well written, have good photos and I think would give a beginner herbalist a great start.  Less than two weeks until Christmas.  You still have a chance to enter my giveaway.  Two people are winning this year!  Here is a link A Holiday Giveaway with a Lemon and Artemisia Twist!  U.S. Readers Only!  We will draw the winning names on Monday afternoon.  So check for a new post after 1:00 PM EST.  Maybe the winner will be you!  Cold and gray in the 'Burgh!  Typical winter day.  Hope you are having a great day wherever you may be!  Talk to you later!
